Postnatal Care

Overview

There are three postnatal wards in the Maternity Unit: Thameside, Worcester and a Transitional Care area. We are sensitive to your needs and our postnatal facilities cater for a range of requirements, whether you have a straight-forward delivery or if you require more support after you baby's birth.

Worcester Ward

Women and babies without any complications/problems are transferred to this ward. You may be transferred back to the main maternity unit if you have any problems or complications.

Transitional Care

In the Transitional Unit you are able to look after your baby even if the baby requires a variety of supportive measures previously only provided in the Neonatal Unit, for example blood glucose monitoring or intravenous antibiotics.

Thameside Ward

You will come to Thameside Ward if you have a complicated delivery or other problems. The Ward also takes babies needing treatment, investigation or closer observations.

Postnatal Visits

Once you return home you can expect visits from your community team. You will be visited the day following transfer home, during this visit the Midwife will check that both you and your baby are recovering after the birth.

Can I book an amenity room?

We have recently launched amenity rooms at Kingston Maternity Unit. These are single rooms, with en-suite facilities within postnatal wards.
