Safety

Giving birth is generally safe wherever you choose to have your baby.

Home birth is generally recommended for women who are fit and healthy and have been well in pregnancy.  These women are more likely to give birth normally and less likely to need assistance in labour such as a caesarean section.  If you do have complications in labour you will need to be transferred into hospital, to the Delivery suite.

Malden Suite is a Midwifery led area and is primarily for women who are fit and healthy and have been well in pregnancy. These women are more likely to give birth normally and less likely to need assistance in labour such as a caesarean section.  If you do have complications in labour you will need to be transferred within the maternity unit to the Delivery suite.

Delivery Suite is an Obstetric Led labour ward. You may be advised to give birth in the Delivery Suite if you have or develop certain medical conditions or pregnancy complications. For women with some medical conditions it is safest togive birth in Delivery Suite  because specialists such as obstetricians and anaesthetists are close at hand  if you need extra help during labour.

Sometimes your first choice of where to give birth  may not be available if many women are in labour at the same time and the unit is full. Ask your midwife what to expect if this happens to you.
